Betty Nguyen is an anchor and correspondent at NBC and MSNBC. She had earlier worked for CBS News. She contributes to the various platforms and broadcasts at CBS including the program ‘The Early Show’.

Born in September 1, 1974 in Saigon, Vietnam, Nguyen is multi-ethnic with Scottish, American, and Vietnamese origins. She was raised in Fort Worth, Texas where she attended the University of Texas situated in Austin. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast journalism. She graduated magna cum laude. She is also a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.

Profession

Nguyen started her career at KWTX-TV as anchor and reporter for the morning show in the CBS affiliate which is located in Waco, Texas. She served for a short stint as freelance correspondent at ‘E! Entertainment Television’. She also served as anchor of the CBS affiliate KTVT-TV situated in Dallas. She later joined CNN in 2004 as the anchor of CNN Newsroom’s morning edition. She served as anchor at CNN for six years. She started working for CBS News in the year 2012. She anchored the show ‘Up to the Minute’, which is an overnight program and also the show ‘CBS Morning News’. She also served as the lead anchor for the shows CBS This Morning Saturday and The Early Show. In the year 2013, she joined NBC and MSNBC.

Significant Assignments

During her journalism career, Nguyen has covered major news stories including the first papal visit of Pope Benedict XVI to United States in the year 2008, the bombing attacks in London, the Virginia Tech Shooting in the year 2007 and the Haiti and Chile earthquakes. While at CNN, she also covered the 2004 Asian Tsunami and the elections in Iraq in 2005. She also covered the Jimena Hurricane in Mexico and the destruction caused by Hurricane Ike. She has also covered the Sierra Leone presidential elections, Zimbabwe economic crisis, and the prosecutions during the apartheid era in South Africa.

Awards

Nguyen has won many awards including the regional Emmy award for Outstanding Noon Newscast, the Legacy of Women award in the 11th annual Legacy of Women awards ceremony, the Great Women of Texas: Women of Influence Honoree by the Fort Worth Business Press, Golden Torch Award by the Vietnamese American National Gala, and the Outstanding Young Texas Exes Award.

Nuygen was featured in the Walker, Texas Ranger episodes as a reporter and was also seen in When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts. She is a fan of Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks. She is also an avid fan of her alma mater Texas Longhorns.
