Bill Lawry

William Morris Lawry was born on February 11, 1937 in Thornbury, Victoria, Australia. His father was a cricket player too, until he was retired at the age of 51. He attended the Preston Technical School. He began playing in cricket since he was nine years old. During his school time he played for the school team. In the 1949 when he was 12 years old, Bill jointed to the fourth team of Northcote. Four years later he finally reached First XI.

William began his professional career when he was eighteen. He jointed to Victoria team and made his debut during the game against team of Western Australia. During the season of 1956-1957 he played almost in all cricket matches. He also was a member of the National cricket team of Australia. In the 1959 he appeared in all ten games during the Indian subcontinent tour. Bill got his breakthrough time in the 1961 when he played against New South Wales at Sydney during the season. At the same year Australia chose his team for Ashes tour. He actually became a team captain for Victoria in 1961 – 1962 season. In the next season of Ashes series he made his Test debut at the Gabba.

He showed very good results in the 1965–66 Ashes series with 592 runs. He continued this season by the amazing play in the final of the Victorian season for his longtime team Northcote. It was the last successful season in his career. The next year Bill and his team toured South Africa and lost the five Test games with 3–1 scores. In the season of 1967-1968 he started with pretty good results against India team. He got two amazing wins in a line.

Afterwards Lawry became a captain of Australian team. Under his leadership, Victoria won 3 matches. His last success as captain was in the 1970 during the tour to India. William and Victoria team got their amazing victory, which actually was the first for the last 35 years for Australian team. Before his retiring in the 1972 he also appeared during the home series against England for the 1970-1971 season. It was the most unsuccessful time in his career. He became so far from his team members and lost many matches because of it. The next season he played for Victoria for the last time. In the end of the season he retired.

After his longtime cricket career Bill appeared on television and radio as commentator for Channel 9. Being the former cricketer in the past, Bill anchored about big cricket games and events. Later he also became a manager of the Victorian Cricket Association. Currently he is still working as commentator and lives in Melbourne as well as Sydney. William has a good voice and like singing. As a hobby he also likes raising pigeons. Currently he resides in his own house in Australia along with his family. His total net worth is not disclosed by any source.
