Gary Joseph Knipfing was born on November 22, 1961, in Mineola, New York. Gary was born to his mother, Janet, who at the time worked in a chiropractor’s office. His father owned an insurance agency. Gary grew up close with two siblings, his brother Kevin Knipfing and his sister, Leslie Knipfing. His brother grew up to become a famous actor and comedian known as Kevin James. Gary's brother Kevin is known for a variety of roles but mostly for The King of Queens, Paul Blart: Mall Cop and the Barnyard.
Gary’s career took off when he began to do shows on the stand-up comedy stage. He had a few appearances on a variety of stages including the Montreal Comedy Festival. However, in order to further develop his career, he had to leave New York and relocate to Los Angeles because of increased traffic in New York. Being a natural comedy talent like his brother, Gary quickly got a lot of spots on numerous talk shows such as The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and The Conan O'Brien Show.
Valentine joined his brother Kevin James on his sitcom with his role as Danny Heffernan on The King of Queens.
