Kiran Chetry

Kiran Chetry is an American broadcast journalist who was the news anchor at CNN for its early morning program till 2011. Earlier she had worked at Fox News Channel from the year 2001 to 2007.

Personal

Kiran Carrie Chetry was born in August 26, 1974, in Kathmandu, Nepal. Her family moved to the United States after a few months and she was raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Her father is a Nepali and her mother is of Ukrainian, German, and Dutch descent. She studied at the College of Journalism, College Park situated in University of Maryland. She received her bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism there and is part of the Alpha Pi Chapter of Delta sorority. She is married to Chris Knowles, a fellow journalist and news anchor. She has two children, a daughter, Maya Rose Knowles and son, Christopher Chetry Knowles.

Profession

Chetry started her career in television journalism in the year 1995 in Rockville Maryland at the News 21 station. She later moved to Erie Pennsylvania and started working for WICU-TV as health reporter and anchor. She shifted to KXTV in the year 1999, which is located in Sacramento, California. She was the morning anchor and correspondent there. She joined Fox News Channel in the year 2001 and served as general reporter.  She was later made anchor of the shows ‘Fox News Live’ and ‘Fox & Friends First’. By 2005, she was a regular host of the show ‘Fox & Friends Weekend’. She left Fox in 2007 and was signed on by CNN immediately afterwards. She was the co-host of the show ‘American Morning’ during morning hours and anchored ‘Anderson Cooper 360’ in evenings. She also worked as fill-in anchor for ‘Paula Zahn Now’ and for the program ‘CNN Newsroom’. She left CNN on July 29, 2011.

Assignments

Chetry has co-anchored the prime time preview of the YouTube Democratic Debate of 2007 and also the analysis of the post-presidential race of Michigan primary in 2008. She was also the iParty correspondent for CNN during the 2008 New Year’s Eve Live show with Anderson Cooper. She has covered the Gulf oil spill, shootings at Tucson, Arizona, and the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the former Pakistan Prime Minister. She has also covered the emergency landing of Captain Chesley Sully Sullenberger III with his crew on the Hudson River.

Kiran Chetry has won many awards including the Best Enterprise Reporting award from the Association of Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcasters in the year 1997 for her report on teen smoking.  She has also been honored with Making Our Mark Award from the Association of Nepalis in America. Chetry was recently seen on the show ‘Rock Center’ in NBC, in March 2013 after 20 months of being off air. She is reported to be on a freelance contract and is expected to be seen on more such shows.
