Nick Swardson was born in Minneapolis and his father is Roger while his mother is Pamela. He is the youngest in three children. His father was a journalist and editor and he has written in many publications like in City Pages and Cincinnati Enquirer. He founded Grand Gazette which is a newspaper for St Paul Community. Roger had invested in the land and he revitalized Grand Avenue, the place known to be a Victoria Crossing. Pamela and Roger got a divorce in year 1989. Nick Swardson went  to St Paul Central High and started to act in improv comedy when he was only 16. While at school, he was a mischievous student who was taking drugs and alcohol. He got four expulsions while in school because he pulled fire alarms in the school so that he can go out to smoke cigarettes. He was also known to fight in class, to post weird signs and to smoke marijuana. He was taken to a rehab program when he was in school.

After graduation of high school, he chose to pursue the standup comedy instead of going to college. Even if he was a fan for the sketch comedy, he decided to go to a stand up comedy as a chance of getting a career in the films since he would have to work with a comedy troupe.

Nick Swardson started doing the standup comedy when she was only 18 and he attended open mic night when he was at Minneapolis club known as Acme Comedy Co. While being interviewed for The Portland Mercury, he did a goof as an open mic presentation and he was encouraged by the owner of the club to continue with the performance. He continued and he was given the award of being the Funniest Person In The Twin Cities. He performed regularly with Knuckleheads, this is a defunct comedy club and it was located in Mall of America.

When he got attention while playing the comedy circles, Swardon got selected to do a Standup Comedy in US Comedy Arts Festival when he was only 20 years old. This festival was meant to help comedy and comics to get exposure to the industry.
