He described the struggles of coaching to Sports Joe, "Fighting to win football matches was a lot easier than fighting to guard our existence as a club. It was an unreal few months in terms of what we had to deal with. We are about - our tenacity, determination, togetherness, the mentality that we can rise above any difficulty with hard work and belief in ourselves - it was shaped then and remains strong. That period was very crucial to everything we have achieved since. We had nothing really and had to give everything. I learned so much in those difficult months, and I wouldn't trade it."
