Early Life and Education

Grant Masaru Imahara was born on October 23, 1970. Though he initially considered a career in screenwriting, he ultimately pursued engineering and established himself as a leading figure in electronics and robotics. He graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. His passion for electronics deepened after working with sound engineer Tomlinson Holman, which marked the beginning of his significant contributions to both international cinema and engineering innovation.

Career at Industrial Light & Magic

After graduating, Imahara joined Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), the renowned special effects company founded by George Lucas. He worked there for nine years in the visual effects division. During his tenure at ILM, he contributed to numerous high-profile films, including the Star Wars prequel trilogy, The Matrix sequels, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, Van Helsing, and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Imahara was also one of only a few individuals officially recognized as operators of the beloved Star Wars droid character, R2-D2.

MythBusters and Television Career

Imahara gained widespread fame as a member of the build team on Discovery Channel’s acclaimed series MythBusters. On the show, he specialized in designing and constructing robots and tackling the more technically demanding myths. His expertise in engineering and robotics was critical to many of the show's most memorable experiments and builds.

In addition to MythBusters, he created the robot "Deadblow" for the combat robotics competition show BattleBots. His innovative designs showcased his advanced knowledge of robotics in competitive environments. He was also responsible for designing control circuits for the Energizer Bunny, the iconic marketing mascot for Energizer Batteries.
