Background

Lisa Whelchel was born on May 29, 1963, in Littlefield, Texas. Whelchel is the daughter of Virginia "Genny," a real estate agent, and James "Jimmy" Whelchel Sr., a retired electrical contractor. The divorce between her parents occurred in 1981, and her mother afterward married Roy Coleman in 1983. Lisa Whelchel is the elder sister of James "Cody" Whelchel Jr. and the elder half-sister of Casey Justice Coleman. Lisa is the mother of Casey Justice Coleman and the grandmother of Casey Justice Whelchel. Aside from that, she has a nephew named Chasin (Cody's son). Lisa and Cody were raised for most of their childhood in Fort Worth, Texas, and Lisa graduated from Liberty Christian Academy in Argyle, Texas, in the class of 1980, where they met.

As a young child, Whelchel converted to Christianity and has since dedicated her life to the Christian beliefs she has learned in Church.

Relationships

Shortly after The Facts of Life ended, she was encouraged by her father to marry Steve, who was one of the pastors at her Church. After she married him, they lived in Sherman Oaks, CA, before moving to Lantana, Texas, in 2006.

Her husband was an Associate Pastor at the Church On the Way in Van Nuys, California. They had three children together, but they got divorced in 2012. She is still friends with her former husband, and they often go to dinner and movies together. They also spend time together during most of the holidays and birthdays of their children.

Acting Career

At age 12, Whelchel was recruited in Texas by talent scouts looking for children interested in working with Disney Studios as a Mouseketeer on The New Mickey Mouse Club. She moved to California the next year and appeared on the show in syndication from 1977 to 1978.

She spent nine years on The Facts of Life, where she played a wealthy and preppy girl named Blair Warner. As a cast member of The Facts of Life, Whelchel once refused a storyline that would have made her character the first among the four main young women on the show to lose her virginity. Whelchel refused because of her Christian convictions, and the storyline was rewritten for the character of "Natalie," portrayed by Mindy Cohn. Whelchel appeared in every episode of the series except that one.
