The second expansion of Assassin’s Creed Origins was released under the title ‘The Curse of the Pharaohs’. Admittedly, the title did not shed much light on what fans should expect. But the release is now here and there’s not a doubt that it delivers exactly what it promised – on the video trailer at least!
Before analysing why this release is different and what we can conclude, let’s see what the new content looks like.
So, the latest DLC takes place on the aftermath of the events of the main game. Bayek comes across an ancient curse that’s plaguing the Thebes region. Equipped with new skills and a tad of natural heroism and curiosity, he travels to that region to investigate further. Along the way, our main character will be given the opportunity to explore landmarks, temples and the secret tombs of the Valley of the Kings.
Apart from presenting the historical timeline with such accuracy, the new content also introduces a plethora of new mythical creatures, such as a giant scorpion, a bird with a human head and a relic that might go unnoticed by many players but will definitely mean a lot for traditional hardcore Assassin’s Creed fans. It is worth noting that this is the first time that imaginary creatures make such a strong presence throughout the expansion’s open world.
Ubisoft stated on a press release: “The Curse of the Pharaohs immerses players in Egyptian mythology, challenging them to battle famous pharaohs and mystical beasts as they investigate the temples of Karnak and Luxor and the secret tombs of the Valley of the Kings to uncover the cause of the curse that has brought dead pharaohs back to life.”
Apart from all that, the level cap is now raised from 45 to 55 and players can hone new abilities, crafting levels, and take advantage of more resources. In addition, new outfits and gear can be crafted, while legendary and rare weapons can be obtained by the luckiest of you.
A simple scroll down on Ubisoft’s forums – or any other forum that covers that same topic for that matter – indicates that everything is working like a clock so far. The players are satisfied, the game is being purchased and no major issues have been brought to anyone’s attention. Sure, a few bugs have been reported but that’s covered by the margin of error. Nothing else is out of the ordinary
But be aware people! We’re only talking about technical issues. Because otherwise, it goes without saying that there was a number of fans who rushed to criticise the game for its lack of stealth mode and too simple fighting system. Truth be told, they may just be right. But that’s not for us to judge. So, let’s stick to the technicalities for the time being. If you have something to say about the gameplay however, make sure to write it down in the comments!
According to the public’s voice, ‘The Curse of the Pharaohs’ is a well-crafted expansion that adds to the story. Not only that, but people also express their hopes about this NOT being the last expansion.
Unfortunately, Ubisoft’s official website is a bit too specific on that one: “[…] In the second and final expansion, Bayek will travel to Thebes to investigate an ancient curse that’s plaguing the region.”
Still, provided that the entire game title is now on a bi-yearly development cycle and that Origins’ game-world has been based so far on actual recorded human history, we hope that the big gaming company will see the opportunity that we see and it will keep evolving the existing title and its history, instead of creating separate ones, or even making this the last one in general.
