Born on September 21, 1965, in Miami, Florida, Abigale "Abby" Lee Miller is the daughter of George L. Miller and Maryen Lorrain Miller. She began her dance training at a young age under the guidance of her mother, a dance instructor who owned a studio in Pennsylvania. Maryen Miller played a pivotal role in nurturing Abby’s passion for dance, often taking her to competitions and providing early exposure to choreography and instruction.
Though Abby was not drawn to live performance, she found her niche in teaching and choreography. By the age of 14, she founded the Abby Lee Dance Company. Her dance studio, established officially in 1980, has trained thousands of students over the years. As a child, she was also involved in various extracurricular activities, including Girl Scouts, roller skating, clarinet lessons, sewing, and swimming.
After her mother's passing, Abby took over operations of The Maryen Lorrain Dance Studio, eventually renaming it Reign Dance Productions. Her most significant career breakthrough came in 2011 when she became the central figure in Lifetime’s reality TV show, Dance Moms. The series followed Miller, her students, and their often-dramatic interactions with their parents at the Abby Lee Dance Company in Pittsburgh.
The success of Dance Moms led to several spin-offs, including Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition (22 episodes), Dance Moms: Miami, and Dance Moms: Abby’s Studio Rescue (7 episodes). In 2015, the show’s cast relocated to Los Angeles, where Miller opened a new branch of her studio, the ALDC (Abby Lee Dance Company).
