AJ Lee is an American retired professional wrestler known for her performances in WWE. WWE is the World Wresting Entertainment, Inc. promotes shows that are not legitimate matches, but rather entertainment based wrestling that is storyline driven and choreographed. AJ Lee was born April Jeanette Mendez on March 19, 1987, in Union City, New Jersey. AJ had a difficult childhood as her family struggled with poverty and often moved from apartment to apartment, even staying in motels and living out of their car when they could not afford rent. AJ was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when she was twenty years old.
The condition had previously been misdiagnosed as depression and led to a suicide attempt by AJ through overdosing on antidepressants and painkillers. AJ began wrestling in 2007 and signed with WWE in 2009. AJ gained fame by capitalizing on promoting a storyline of a mentally unstable wrestler. The readers of Pro Wrestling Illustrated voted her Woman of the Year from 2012 through 2014. After retiring from wrestling in 2015, AJ wrote a memoir called Crazy is My Superpower: How I Triumphed by Breaking Bones, Breaking Hearts, and Breaking the Rules, which was a New York Times Best Seller, debuting at number ten for hardcover non-fiction.
