Morkel made his international debut for South Africa in a 2004 ODI against New Zealand. Over his career he went on to play 58 ODIs and 50 T20Is, but just a single Test—capped in March 2009 against Australia, filling in for his injured brother Morne. He made key contributions in limited-overs formats for South Africa. Despite strong domestic and T20 performances, he was occasionally overlooked for national selection, as seen during the Windies' tour when David Miller was chosen instead. He retired from all forms of cricket in January 2019.
