Modeling Career and Transition to Acting

Smart began her career as a fashion model and worked in Italy, where she met fellow model Ali Larter. Their friendship led both of them to move to Los Angeles to pursue acting. They later enrolled in acting classes together, marking Amy's transition from modeling to acting.

Film and Television Career

In 1993, Amy Smart appeared in the music video for The Lemonheads' song "It's About Time." She earned her first film role in the 1997 horror anthology film Campfire Tales, directed by Martin Kunert. That same year, she had a supporting role in the science fiction film Starship Troopers, where she portrayed a co-pilot alongside Denise Richards' character, Carmen Ibanez.

Smart's acting credits grew to include small roles in films such as Queenie in 1996—a short film adaptation of John Updike's story "A&P." She also appeared in the television miniseries The '70s, in which she played a young woman from Ohio navigating the turbulent decade.

Other notable roles include appearances in Outside Providence, Varsity Blues, and a recurring role on the TV series Felicity. She also portrayed the love interest of the main character, J.D., in the popular medical comedy series Scrubs. In 2004, she starred opposite Ashton Kutcher in the psychological thriller The Butterfly Effect, one of the most prominent roles of her career.

Personal Life and Marriage to Carter Oosterhouse

Amy Smart married television personality and HGTV host Carter Oosterhouse in 2011, in a ceremony held in Traverse City, Michigan. Before meeting, Smart was unfamiliar with Oosterhouse's television work, as she was not a frequent TV viewer. The couple connected while working together for the Environmental Media Awards, discovering a shared passion for environmental advocacy.

Initially, both were in separate relationships, but they remained friends while collaborating on a school garden project. When their previous relationships ended around the same time, they began dating and married a year later. Their wedding was attended by approximately 220 guests. After struggling with infertility, the couple welcomed their first child, daughter Flora, via surrogate on December 26, 2016.
