André Villas-Boas was born on 17 October 1977 in Porto, Portugal. His father is Luís Filipe Manuel, and his mother is Maria Helena. He has one sibling. André spent his childhood in Porto, where he also completed his schooling.
Villas-Boas began his professional journey in football at the young age of 16 when he joined the observation department at FC Porto. Demonstrating an analytical mind and deep understanding of the game, he quickly progressed and later served as an assistant coach.
In 2009, Villas-Boas made the pivotal decision to leave José Mourinho’s coaching staff to pursue a managerial role. He was soon appointed head coach of Académica de Coimbra in the Primeira Liga. During his tenure, the team performed admirably and reached the semi-finals of the Portuguese League Cup, earning him national recognition.
Impressed by his success at Académica, FC Porto appointed Villas-Boas as head coach in 2010. His impact was immediate: within two months, Porto won the Portuguese Super Cup. Under his leadership, the team also secured the UEFA Europa League title during the 2010–2011 season. After a highly successful year, Villas-Boas resigned in June 2011 to accept an offer from Chelsea, his self-proclaimed dream club.
In 2011, Villas-Boas signed a three-year contract with Chelsea for a reported fee of £13.3 million. He guided the team to victory in the 2011 Barclays Asia Trophy. However, due to inconsistent team performances, he was dismissed in March 2012, ending his tenure with the club after less than a year.
