Beverly Johnson was born in 1952 in Buffalo, New York, into a middle-class family. As a youth, she excelled in competitive swimming and initially aspired to become a lawyer. She went on to study criminal justice at Northeastern University. During a summer break in 1971, she began exploring modeling, which marked the beginning of her career in fashion.

Breakthrough in Modeling
Johnson gained national attention when she became the first African-American model to appear on the cover of American Vogue in its August 1974 issue. This milestone not only launched her into the spotlight but also challenged and transformed long-standing standards of beauty in the U.S. fashion industry. The following year, in 1975, she also became the first Black woman to appear on the cover of the French edition of Elle.
Her modeling success quickly grew, and over time, she appeared on more than 500 magazine covers, further solidifying her impact on the industry.
