He was born in Brooklyn to Amy and Nathan Dishy. His father was from Lebanon and his mother was from Israel. They were Jewish immigrants in Brooklyn. He married Judy Graudbart and has two children with her. He has won many awards including Drama Desk Award of 1977. He studied drama major in Syracuse University. His childhood friend Peter Falk is also an actor who acted with him in Columbo. He worked in military and served by appearing in revue called Rolling Along.

Judy is also an actress known for her role in The Electric Company. Neither Bob nor Judy is known to have any extra marital affair. Thus, Bob got the role and made an awe-striking performance that brought it more offers. Before his full time Broadway career, he also acted as a comedian. He then appeared in Broadway shows as main characters like From A to Z, A Way of Life and many others. He started his film career in 1970. Lovers and Other Strangers movie will take a big place in his biography as his first breakthrough in film industry.
