Early Life and Education

Charlie Cox was born on December 15, 1982, in London, England, and holds British nationality. Raised in a Roman Catholic family, he was the youngest of five children. He attended Ashdown House School in East Sussex before enrolling at Sherborne School in Dorset. Motivated by a growing passion for acting, Cox pursued formal training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

Film and Television Career

Cox began his professional acting career with a breakthrough role in the 2007 fantasy film Stardust, portraying Tristan Thorne. He went on to appear in a range of film projects including Stone of Destiny (as Ian Hamilton), Glorious 39, There Be Dragons, Dot the I, and The Theory of Everything. Earlier in his career, he also featured in The Merchant of Venice and Casanova.

On television, Cox garnered attention for his role as Owen Sleater in seasons two and three of HBO’s critically acclaimed series Boardwalk Empire. His additional TV credits include Lewis, Downton Abbey, A for Andromeda, Legacy, Moby Dick, and Judge John Deed.

In the theatre, Cox has appeared in celebrated stage productions including The Collection, Incognito, 'Tis Pity She's a Whore, and The Prince of Homburg.

The Daredevil and Global Recognition

Charlie Cox achieved international recognition for his portrayal of Matt Murdock, also known as Daredevil, in the Marvel Television series Daredevil, which aired on Netflix. His nuanced performance as a blind lawyer-turned-vigilante earned widespread critical acclaim and made him a household name among Marvel fans.

In an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Cox admitted he initially did not know the character was blind when first approached about the role. Despite this surprise, he fully embraced the role, a decision that many interpreted as a testament to his commitment and professionalism.

For his work on Daredevil, Cox was honored with the Helen Keller Achievement Award, presented by the American Foundation for the Blind, recognizing his sensitive and compelling portrayal of a visually impaired character.
