Christina Tosi was born on November 9, 1981, in Ohio, United States, to Greta Tosi-Miller. She was raised in Springfield, Virginia, and is of Italian-American descent. Tosi spent some time living in Florence, Tuscany, Italy. Her father worked as an agricultural economist, and her mother was an accountant.
She initially enrolled at the University of Virginia, where she studied electrical engineering briefly. Realizing her passion lay elsewhere, she transferred to James Madison University, where she completed her undergraduate education. Following graduation, she pursued her culinary interests by enrolling in the pastry arts program at the French Culinary Institute in New York City.
Tosi began her culinary career working in New York City kitchens. She joined the Momofuku restaurant group, originally hired by founder David Chang to develop the company's food safety plan. Impressed by her talent and culinary vision, Chang offered Tosi the opportunity to create a dessert program for the restaurant, which previously did not include desserts on its menu.
This opportunity led to the creation of Momofuku Milk Bar, a bakery concept that Tosi developed as the founder and head chef. She opened five retail outlets across New York City and later expanded the business with additional locations in Toronto, Canada, and Washington, D.C., by the end of 2015.
In October 2011, Tosi published her first cookbook, Momofuku Milk Bar, featuring recipes for the bakery’s popular desserts. In 2012, she began selling cookie mixes through Williams-Sonoma stores, a venture that transitioned in 2015 into an exclusive partnership with Target.
