Early Life and Education
Born on November 19, 1983, in Kraków, Poland, Daria Werbowy immigrated to Canada with her family at the age of three. She holds dual citizenship—Canadian and Ukrainian. Werbowy grew up in Mississauga, Ontario, where she attended St. Sofia Ukrainian Catholic Elementary School. She later pursued visual arts at Cawthra Park Secondary School, a regional arts-focused high school known for nurturing talented students in creative disciplines.
Modeling Career Beginnings
Although Werbowy had no initial ambitions to become a model, her journey into the fashion industry began when a friend's mother, involved in a model and talent management agency, recognized her potential. At the age of 14, she won a national modeling contest in Canada, which led to early representation by Elite Model Management. While this brought bookings within Canada, it did not immediately launch her international career.
In pursuit of global opportunities, Werbowy relocated to Greece and later London, but encountered difficulty gaining a strong international presence. The events of September 11, 2001, led to numerous cancellations in the fashion industry, resulting in a temporary setback in her work. She returned to Canada and continued modeling as a way to support her art education. Her big break came when she secured a coveted exclusive contract with Prada, propelling her career to a global scale with the support of IMG Models (International Management Group).
Breakthrough with Prada and Lancôme
Werbowy's international rise began during the Fall/Winter 2003 season, when she debuted in campaigns for both Prada and Vogue Italia. Her high-demand runway presence led to a record-breaking number of show openings and closings in a single season, solidifying her status as a top model.
In 2004, she signed a major contract with Lancôme reportedly valued at over $1 million annually. This partnership strengthened her image as a premier beauty model and further expanded her global recognition. Some of her key advertising clients have included Prada, Gucci, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Missoni, Roberto Cavalli, Versace, Valentino, Pepe Jeans, and Oroton.
