Broadcasting Career

Before breaking into broadcasting, Holmes worked at a Dublin-based business magazine. In 1979, he joined Ulster Television, where he began reporting on agriculture and rural affairs. His early work earned him recognition, including a Hometown Radio Award.

Holmes rose to national prominence as a television presenter, notably co-hosting GMTV, and later anchoring Sky News Sunrise from 2005 to 2016. Holmes married fellow television presenter Ruth Langsford in June 2010. Their wedding gained media attention, with exclusive coverage published by Hello! magazine across two issues in July of that year. The couple’s son, Jack Alexander Holmes, was born in 2002. Holmes also has three children—Declan, Rebecca, and Niall—from a previous marriage.

Committed to social causes, Holmes and Langsford have been strong supporters of the Dementia Friends Campaign, led by the Alzheimer’s Society. They are also patrons of Dogs Trust, reflecting their support for animal welfare.
