Later in 2002, Eddie was signed by Portsmouth. The fee for his contract was 400 thousand Great Britain Pound. The same year, Eddie suffered a knee injury, and it took him almost 18 months to recover. He was not very lucky as he was again injured after the recovery, and that was the end of his career as a player. After taking his retirement from the game, he started working as a coach.
He didn't score a goal during his career as a player because he played as a defender.
Eddie worked as a coach for Bournemouth, and he helped his team in improving their performance exponentially. He taught a lot of new tactics to the group, which eventually helped them push the matches to a sure shot wins.
He described the struggles of coaching to Sports Joe, "Fighting to win football matches was a lot easier than fighting to guard our existence as a club. It was an unreal few months in terms of what we had to deal with. We are about - our tenacity, determination, togetherness, the mentality that we can rise above any difficulty with hard work and belief in ourselves - it was shaped then and remains strong. That period was very crucial to everything we have achieved since. We had nothing really and had to give everything. I learned so much in those difficult months, and I wouldn't trade it."
In January 2011, Eddie decided to leave Bournemouth, and he started working for Burnley. He was appointed as a manager there, but Eddie left Burnley within two years. He didn't give any reason for the resignation. During one of the interviews, he just said that he left the team for some personal reason. As soon as he left Burnley, he decided to join Bournemouth once again as a manager. He motivated the team again and led the team to FA Cup.
In 2015, Eddie was honored by the award, Manager of the Decade. Football League Awards sponsored the prize. Eddie's teams played 398 matches under his leadership regarding stats, out of which the team won 183 games, and 82 games resulted in a draw. He commanded a win percentage of 46 percent, which is not very impressive because of his performance in Burnley.
Eddie was also honored by the LMA Manager of the Year award in 2015 and the LMA Championship Manager of the Year in the 2014 season. He reached the mountain of coaching success because of his hard work.
Eddie is married to Vicki Howe, and after the marriage, his wife gave birth to two children. Eddie is also a dog lover, and he had a black Labrador in his family. Eddie got the initials of his dog's name tattooed on his wrist after the death of his beloved dog.
