Aaron Charles Carter was born on December 7, 1987, in Tampa, Florida, USA. He was the son of Jane Elizabeth and Robert Gene Carter. Originally from New York State, the Carter family later settled in Florida. Aaron had one older brother, Nick Carter, famously known as a member of the boy band Backstreet Boys, as well as three sisters. He was named after his paternal grandfather, Aaron Charles Carter, and his maternal grandfather, Douglas "Charles" Spaulding. Carter attended Frank D. Miles Elementary School and the Ruskin School in Florida.
Carter began his music career at the age of seven as the lead singer of a band called Dead End. He left the band two years later due to creative differences, as they moved toward alternative music while he preferred pop. In March 1997, he performed a cover of The Jets' "Crush on You" during the opening act for the Backstreet Boys in Berlin. The performance led to a recording contract, and by the end of 1997, Carter released his debut single, "Crush on You." His self-titled debut album, released in Europe on December 1, 1997, achieved gold status in countries such as Denmark, Germany, Canada, Norway, and Spain. The album was released in the United States on June 16, 1998.
Carter's next album, Aaron's Party (Come Get It), was released in 2000 under Jive Records and marked his mainstream breakthrough. The album sold over 1.5 million copies in the United States and included hit singles like "I Want Candy," "Aaron's Party (Come Get It)," "That's How I Beat Shaq," and "Bounce." These songs gained heavy airplay on Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. Around this time, Carter also made appearances on Nickelodeon and opened for artists like Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys. The album was certified platinum in December 2000, further solidifying his pop teen idol status. During that period, he began dating actress Hilary Duff.
On January 23, 2011, Carter's manager Johnny Wright announced that Aaron had entered a treatment facility to address emotional and psychological issues. Carter later addressed fans, stating, "The main thing in life is not to be afraid of being human." On February 10, 2011, it was reported that he had successfully completed a month-long rehabilitation program at the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California. During this time, he had been scheduled to perform a benefit concert for Audrianna Bartol on February 5, 2011, in Lake Ronkonkoma, NY, as well as a fundraiser for the activist organization "Four Years. Go," initially scheduled for February 24, 2011, in Manville, New Jersey.
On November 22, 2013, Aaron Carter filed for bankruptcy, citing more than $3.5 million in debt, mostly stemming from unpaid taxes accrued during his peak fame in the early 2000s. His spokesperson, Steve Honig, told CNN, "This is not a negative thing—it's quite positive. It's him doing what he needs to do to move forward." According to court filings, Carter owed approximately $1.3 million to the IRS from earnings made in 2003, when he was just 16 years old. At the time of the filing, Carter was on tour and reported earning around $2,000 per month. He resided with a family member in Florida when not touring to manage living expenses.
