Alanna Rizzo is an American sports reporter for the MLB team, The Los Angeles Dodgers on SportsNet LA.
Background
Rizzo is a native of Colorado. She participated in track and cross country at Sierra High School in Colorado Springs as a member of the class of 1993. She did so well in athletics that she was later inducted into school’s athletic hall of fame.
Though she earned an undergraduate degree in international business, Rizzo's interests shifted away from the business world. She returned to the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she received a degree in broadcast journalism in 2003.
She described the moment she wanted to be a broadcaster in an interview with the LA Times, “I had an epiphany between Christmas and New Year’s of 2001. I was in sales and marketing in the hotel industry and I was just very unfulfilled. I thought, if I could do anything what would it be? If money wasn’t an object, if I won the lottery or what have you. I’ve always been an avid sports fan and avid participant in my younger years. I took a second mortgage on my house, went back to school and got a master’s in journalism and started from the bottom and worked my way up.”
Sports Reporting Career
In early 2012, she worked for MLB Network on shows like “Intentional Talk” and “Quick Pitch”. She quickly became a fan favorite among the viewers. She was knowledgeable, witty, and always knew what the fans wanted to see and hear. She was also the reporter for Root Sports Rocky Mountain.
Her career with the Los Angeles Dodgers began in January of 2014 and since then she has continued to show why she is such an incredible reporter.
She explained to the LA Times what her game day routine was when she covers Dodger games, “Often, people think we just show up right before first pitch, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m here four-and-a-half hours before the game starts. My typical routine is to come to the park, gather all of the interviews for our pregame show as well as do the one-on-one interview, all of the manager’s interviews and then I host an hour show prior. During the game, I do anywhere from three to five sideline hits. And then postgame, the interview on the field if the Dodgers win, which we’ve had a lot of this year — not lately — but a lot. And then I go immediately to do the Dave Roberts postgame press conference and then go into the clubhouse to gather all of the player interviews for that particular game. It’s that, every single game, throughout the entire season. The road routine differs in that I’m my own producer on the road. I write all of my own stuff anyway, home or away. All of my own questions; nobody’s feeding me anything.

Harassment From Fans
Even with all of Alanna’s success, she still has to deal with the adversity of being a woman in the sports world. She is constantly harassed on Twitter and Instagram by people just because of her looks alone. Of course, she never allows this to get to her or stop her from doing what she loves.
She will quickly block the harassers and get back to replying to her true fans in the comments. Unfortunately, this seems to be a trend most women in sports have to deal with. Luckily, Alanna, being the strong woman she is, brushes it off and gets back to work.
She is aware of her natural beauty, but she does not rely on it to gain her popularity. Her intelligence and passion for baseball speak for itself. Alanna is a female role model for many young women, especially those that are more timid to join the sports industry because it is seen as a “man’s job.”
Awards
In her career, she has won five Emmys for her work. In December of 2015, she won the Latina Leadership Award from H.O.P.E. (Hispanas Organized for Political Equality). This award is presented to Latina women in California who demonstrate leadership in their respective fields.
Personal Life
In 2013, she married Justin Kole. Justin is a small time business owner. She said that her husband is very supportive of her and her career. He moved with her three times in a year to make her career feasible.
A misconception that is continuously brought up to Alanna is her relationship to Cubs’ All-Star Anthony Rizzo because of their same last name. Anytime she gets asked this question she laughs and lets people know they have no relation what so ever. However, she does embrace the fun side of it and likes to mess with her fans now and then.
When it comes to her married life, she never talks a lot about it. She never mentioned that she had a boyfriend when she was dating Justin. Justin is invisible in the media. He has never commented on how good his life is with his wife and other personal details.
She loves to travel and relax, telling the LA times her favorite cities and ways to relax “Denver, of course, but that’s a biased opinion. I love the big cities. I love New York, I love Chicago. I do actually really like Phoenix. Love San Francisco, but I don’t love the weather. I think Pittsburgh is a very underrated city and it’s one of my favorite ballparks, hands down. PNC Park is beautiful. It’s such a beautiful panoramic view of the city and the bridge, it’s gorgeous. I always joke that I’m contractually obligated to be perpetually tired because this is such a long season. To get away from it, I love good food and good wine. I’d like to say I work out to get my stress out. I do a little bit but I’m certainly not very disciplined or dedicated. I look forward to the off-season more than anything because you can appreciate the downtime and getting reacquainted with your friends and your family and your life. During the season you just don’t have that opportunity. My passion is dog rescue and dog advocacy. I’m a huge proponent of shutting down puppy mills and rescuing dogs. The whole adopt-don’t-shop campaigns, that’s where my passion lies outside of work.”
