Early Life and Background
Alia Martine Shawkat was born in April 1989 in Riverside, California, and raised in Palm Springs. She is the daughter of actor Tony Shawkat and Dina Shawkat. Her maternal grandfather, Paul Burke, was also a well-known actor, remembered for his roles in television during the 1960s.
Alia developed an interest in the arts early in life. At the age of nine, she appeared in a Calvin Klein brochure, marking her first foray into modeling. Outside of acting, she is passionate about painting and music. Shawkat actively participates in gallery exhibitions and has hosted public showings of her artwork. She was educated in a local school in Rancho Mirage and enjoys hobbies such as horseback riding, dancing, and skating.
Shawkat began her acting career at age 11 with the role of Young Hannah Rayburn in the ABC Family series State of Grace. Prior to this, she held minor roles in projects such as the feature film Three Kings and television shows including JAG and The Trial of Old Drum.
Her breakout role came in 2003 when she was cast as Maeby Fünke in the award-winning comedy series Arrested Development. The show ran from 2003 to 2006 during its original broadcast and earned widespread critical acclaim. Shawkat’s performance as the scheming and quick-witted Maeby earned her a TV Land Award and a Young Artist Award. She credited show creator Mitch Hurwitz with helping shape her early career and described the cast as a positive and nurturing creative environment.
Following her success on Arrested Development, Shawkat continued to build a diverse résumé with appearances in both film and television. She held roles in productions such as Without a Trace, Whip It, The Runaways, and The Business. Her involvement in the arts expanded into music as well—she made a cameo in the music video for "Tall Boy" and has contributed guest vocals to select tracks.
Alia Shawkat is known to keep her personal life relatively private. Although previously linked to musician and producer Jack Antonoff, the relationship ended in 2010. She was later rumored to be dating actor Michael Angarano after being seen with him publicly, though the relationship reportedly lasted less than two years. As of now, Shawkat is single with no confirmed current partners.
Known for her down-to-earth persona and artistic sensibilities, Shawkat is often praised for her natural charisma, expressive features, and unconventional charm both on and off screen.
In 2016, Shawkat appeared in Adam Green’s indie film Aladdin, a surreal and modern adaptation of the classic tale, released digitally in the U.S. and Canada. She also starred in Paint It Black, the directorial debut of actress Amber Tamblyn. Shawkat played a woman grappling with the mysterious loss of her boyfriend and forming a complicated relationship with his grieving mother. She announced the film's premiere at the LA Film Festival through her official Twitter account, with the release scheduled for June 2016.
As of 2024, Alia Shawkat’s net worth is estimated to be over $4 million. She continues to work across mediums, including acting, painting, and voice work, reflecting her versatility and dedication to the arts.
