Alyson Renae “Aly” Michalka was born in 1989 in Torrance, California. She was raised in both the Seattle area of Washington and in Southern California. Her father, Mark Michalka, owns a contracting company, while her mother, Carrie, is a musician who performed in a Christian rock band. Aly has a younger sister, Amanda Joy “AJ” Michalka, with whom she has collaborated extensively throughout her career.
Aly Michalka began playing piano at the age of five and learned to play guitar by the time she was 13. Her acting experience also started early, primarily in church plays and community productions. She was raised in a Christian household and continues to practice her faith.
Aly gained national recognition through her role as Keely Teslow on the Disney Channel original series Phil of the Future. She also appeared in the Disney Channel Original Movie Cow Belles, where she played Taylor Callum alongside her sister AJ.
After her Disney roles, Aly starred as Marti Perkins in the CW television drama Hellcats. She also played Rhiannon Abernathy in the 2010 Golden Globe-nominated film Easy A.
Aly and her sister AJ form the musical duo now known as 78violet, previously called Aly & AJ. The duo released their debut album, Into The Rush, in 2005. This was followed by the 2006 holiday album Acoustic Hearts of Winter, which featured nine covers and two original songs. Their third studio album, Insomniatic, was released in 2007 and included the hit single "Potential Breakup Song," which reached the Top 20 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. A planned fourth album was shelved in 2010 when they parted ways with their record label. However, they later released the single "Hothouse" and have continued to develop new music.
Aly Michalka had a guest role on the sitcom Two and a Half Men, portraying Brooke, the love interest of Jenny Harper (played by Amber Tamblyn), a character revealed to be the long-lost daughter of Charlie Harper. She also appeared in a recurring role on the CW series iZombie, playing Peyton Charles, a close friend of the main protagonist.
In 2015, Aly alongside AJ starred in the independent film Weepah Way for Now, which was written and directed by Aly's husband, Stephen Ringer. The film focuses on the personal struggles and ambitions of two sisters and showcases Aly's interest in more intimate, character-driven projects.
In addition to her acting and musical career, Aly Michalka has done modeling work for brands such as Penumbra and Ocean Pacific. She has appeared in spreads for magazines including Maxim, Zooey, and OK!, contributing to her visibility in both fashion and entertainment media.
Aly met independent film producer Stephen Ringer on the set of the film Sequoia in 2012. The couple became engaged in Big Sur, California, and were married in 2015 in a private ceremony held in Portofino, Italy. They continue to collaborate professionally, especially on independent film projects.
