Amy Acker is an American actress, born in 1976 in Dallas, Texas. Her mother was a homemaker, and her father worked as a lawyer. Acker attended Lake Highlands High School in Dallas before pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theater at Southern Methodist University. During her junior year in college, she modeled for the J. Crew catalog. After graduating, she began her acting career in theater, including a notable stint with the American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin.
Acker gained recognition for her role as Winifred "Fred" Burkle in the television series Angel, appearing from the second through the fifth seasons. She also appeared in the third season of the web series Husbands as Claudia, the unexpected ex-fiancée of Brady Kelly. Additionally, she took on the role of Audrey, the cellist and former love interest of Agent Phil Coulson, in Marvel’s television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
One of Acker’s most notable recent roles was Samantha "Root" Groves in the CBS drama Person of Interest. She began as a guest star and became a series regular starting in the third season, continuing through the show's conclusion in 2016. Her portrayal of Root, a skilled hacker and morally complex character, garnered critical acclaim.
