David Andrew Samberg, known professionally as Andy Samberg, is an American actor, comedian, writer, producer, and musician. He was born in California to Marjorie, a teacher, and Joe Samberg, a photographer. He has two siblings, Johanna and Darrow, and comes from a Jewish background.
Samberg's career launched on YouTube, where he gained popularity by sharing original comedy videos with his friends, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. Together, they formed the comedy troupe The Lonely Island. Their videos quickly garnered attention and led to widespread online fame.
He began his entertainment career as a comedic writer and performer. After graduating from college, Samberg and his friends started creating short videos, which eventually caught the attention of executives at "Saturday Night Live" (SNL). As a result, he was hired as a cast member in 2005.
Samberg, along with Schaffer and Taccone, formed the musical comedy group The Lonely Island. Their debut album, Incredibad (2009), became the highest-selling comedy album in the U.S. that year. One of their most successful tracks, "I'm on a Boat," featuring T-Pain, was nominated for a Grammy Award.
The group released additional albums and continued to build a strong fanbase. In 2016, they co-wrote and starred in the mockumentary film Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, further solidifying their impact in musical comedy.
Beyond music, Samberg pursued a successful acting career. He starred in numerous theatrical films and TV series. One of his most prominent roles has been as Detective Jake Peralta in the critically acclaimed comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a role that earned him the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Comedy TV Actor in 2014.
He also provided the voice of Jonathan in the animated hit Hotel Transylvania (2012), a role he reprised in multiple sequels. In 2016, he voiced a character in the animated movie Storks.
Samberg has hosted several major events, including the Primetime Emmy Awards and the MTV Movie Awards. During his stint as an Emmy Awards host, his political humor drew attention, including a moment when he made a controversial joke referencing then-presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Andy Samberg married musician Joanna Newsom, a harpist, vocalist, lyricist, and actress, in September 2013. The couple had been in a relationship for five years prior to their engagement in February 2013. They reside in a historic estate in Moorcrest, once rented by Charlie Chaplin.
Samberg met Newsom at one of her concerts and has expressed admiration for her work in interviews. The couple maintains a low-profile lifestyle and is known for their mutual support of each other’s artistic careers.
Throughout his career, Samberg has received numerous accolades. He won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for his work on SNL and has been nominated for several other awards including Teen Choice Awards, People’s Choice Awards, and additional Emmy nominations.
His digital short “Lazy Sunday” became a viral sensation shortly after its release and was considered a breakthrough moment for both him and SNL’s digital content. His work continues to attract international recognition and a growing fanbase.
Now in his early 40s, Samberg remains active in both television and film. He continues to develop new comedy projects, contributes musically with The Lonely Island, and is recognized as a versatile performer, lyricist, and filmmaker. For his television roles, including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, he reportedly earned a salary of $125,000 per episode at the height of the show’s popularity.
Samberg’s dynamic range and ability to blend comedy with music and acting have earned him a distinct place in modern American entertainment.
