Ashley Wagner is an American figure skater who was born on May 16, 1991, in Heidelberg, Germany where she was the only daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Eric Wagner of the U.S. Army and former schoolteacher, Melissa James. She showed an interest in skating at the age of five and began training in Eagle River, Alaska after her mother told her she could choose ballet or figure skating. A young and passionate Wagner told her mother she "wasn't going to do anything in pink shoes". Wagner also has a brother who was also a competitive skater. Her mother says she recognized her daughter's talent early on and she quickly became a great skater.
She won a gold medal at her very first competition. In 1998, Wagner watched fellow skater Tara Lipinski win the gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. It was right then that Wagner knew she wanted to be in the Olympics. She quickly set to work training in Kansas City and Tacoma, Washington. Her family moved to Portland, Oregon where she received instruction from Tonya Harding's former coach, Dody Teachman. Wagner has been competing in figure skating from 2005 to 2018 and shows no signs of stopping any time soon.
