Early Years and Education:
Bernard "Bernie" John Taupin was born in a Flatters Farmhouse with no electricity in southern Lincolnshire, England on May 22, 1950, to his mother and father Robert Taupin. Taupin's birthplace is located between the village of Anwick and the town of Sleaford and he is of French ancestry. His father Robert Taupin was educated in Dijon and worked as a stockman by a large farm estate near the town of Market Rasen. His mother was from Switzerland and worked as a nanny. The family eventually moved to Rowston Manor, a major upgrade from the Flatters Farmhouse that didn't even have power.
During his childhood, Taupin's father decided to try his hand at independent farming moving the family with him to a run-down Maltkiln Farm in the northern Lincolnshire village of Owmby-by-Spital. It is here that Taupin's 11-year younger brother Tony would be born and sometime later another brother named Christopher was born. Taupin was never a good student unlike his younger brother who attended grammar school but he did show a passion for writing. When he was just 15-years-old, Taupin dropped out of school and began an internship in the print room of a local newspaper "The Lincolnshire Standard". Before long he would develop the desire to become a journalist.
Taupin wasn't in the print room for long, he soon left and spent the rest of his teenage years hanging out with friends. He would hitchhike on country roads just to reach youth club dances in nearby villages where he would play snooker and drink in the Aston Arms Pub in Market Rasen. Taupin had gone through several on and off part-time jobs by the age of 17, it was then that he answered an advertisement that would eventually lead to his collaboration with Elton John. Taupin's mother was educated in French literature and his maternal grandfather Poppy was a graduate of the University of Cambridge where he taught classics. They taught him an appreciation for nature as well as literature and narrative poetry which would influence his lyrics early on.
Career:
Bernie Taupin is best known for his years-long collaboration with Elton John which began in 1967 when he answered an advertisement placed in the New Musical Express by Liberty records A&R man Ray Williams. Ironically, Elton John also answered the same advertisement for talent put out by Williams but John told the man behind the desk at the audition that he could not write lyrics. Neither Taupin nor John would pass the audition but on his way out, the man behind the desk handed John a sealed envelope from a submission pile of lyrics. John would open the envelope during the ride home on the London Underground. By a pure stroke of luck, the envelope handed to the future superstar contained Taupin's writings which were poetry and the rest is history.

The pair would go on to collaborate on over thirty albums beginning in the early 70's and ending to date. The pair split up and stopped collaborating with one another between 1977 and 1979. During their time apart, Taupin would work with other songwriters including Alice Cooper while John worked with other greats such as Gary Osborne and Tom Robinson. Despite taking some time apart, Taupin and John did release a single in 1978 titled "Ego" which was their only collaboration of note during that period. The pair soon resumed writing together on an occasional basis at first in 1980. During this time, Taupin would contribute lyrics to only three or four songs on each of John's albums, "The Fox", "21 at 33", and "Jump Up!"
A 1991 documentary called "Two Rooms" described the writing style the pair developed which involved Taupin writing the lyrics and then John putting them to music. The duo still works together in fundamentally the same way to this day with Taupin coming up with words and John putting them to music but today the two interact far more on songs after Taupin joining John in the studio as the songs were written. He would also be present occasionally during recording sessions. Elton John is far from the only big name that Taupin wrote lyrics for. He also wrote lyrics for Starship, Heart, Alice Cooper, David Ackles, and French American musician, Josquin Des Pres, to name a few. Taupin also released three solo albums of his own titled "Taupin," "He Who Rides The Tiger", and "Tribe".
Personal Life:
Bernie Taupin stands 5 feet 6 inches tall with blue eyes and dark brown hair and follows the Roman Catholic religion. Aside from his career as a songwriter, Taupin enjoys writing books but it was his career as a songwriter that took him to Southern California in the mid-1970's. He even published a successful novel called "The Devil at High Noon". Taupin also enjoys painting and owns a restaurant in downtown Los Angeles called "Cicada". While Taupin achieved great success with his passions, his relationships did not fare nearly as good.
The songwriter and author would go on to marry four times and get divorced three times. His first wife was Maxine Feibelman who he married in 1971. Taupin and Feibelman divorced a short time after he would go on to marry his second wife, Toni Lynn Russo in 1979. Again, the relationship would be doomed to failure and he and Russo divorced in 1991. For a third time Taupin married, this time to a woman named Stephanie Haymes on August 21, 1993, but this marriage would not last either and the pair divorced in 1998.
Taupin is currently living with his fourth wife named Heather Lynn Hodgins Kidd whom he wed on March 27, 2004. Taupin and Kidd went on to have two daughters, Charley Indiana and Georgey Devon. Ever since the 1980's, Taupin and Kidd have been living on their ranch north of Los Angeles near Santa Ynez, California. Taupin has established himself as a respected songwriter and author and has earned a high degree of success in his lifetime. He has a net worth of $70 million and he is quite active on both Twitter and Facebook where he enjoys interacting with fans.
