Bishop Eddie Long was known as an American pastor. He is most famous for his work at the megachurch, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.
Eddie Lee Long was born on May 12, 1953 in Huntersville, North Carolina. Long was educated at Interdenominational Theological Center and North Carolina Central University.
Long got married to Dabara Houston in 1981 with whom he had a son named Edward. The marriage was brief before the couple got divorced. Long had a violent and vicious temper and Houston was a victim of abusive treatment. She claimed that he beat her when she was pregnant. Fearing for their safety, Houston took her little son with her and ran away from their Fairburn home. Long denied all the allegations. The custody of their 2-year-old son was awarded to Houston.
In 1990, Long married Vanessa Griffin. They had three children named Eric, Jared, and Taylor.
Bishop Long was a revolutionary spiritual leader, motivational speaker, and a best-selling author. Globally, he was recognized as a gifted charismatic orator, with an influential voice.
Bishop Long’s broadcast, Taking Authority aired on Trinity Broadcast Network and reaches 172 countries and was viewed by more than 270 million people. The broadcast has won him an Emmy Award. His messages of faith have also been documented in his books. He was one of the most famous pastors in Georgia. He was the CEO of the New Birth Christian Academy, a private school, which opened in 1993.

Bishop Long constantly advocated for awareness and change. He was deeply concerned with community welfare, particularly with that of the youth. His interest lies in solving social ills such as poverty, immorality, and drug abuse. Bishop Long was criticized for his outspokenness against homosexuality,
Bishop ran a non-profit charity organization, Bishop Eddie Long Ministries Inc. He has been recognized for his leadership qualities and dedicated service and was honored with the Trumpet Award in 2005. Though his spiritual and business training are factors for his phenomenal success as a religious leader, Bishop Long quickly pointed out that his success truly belonged to God. He truly believed that by helping others, one can reach closer to God.
Long and Vanessa served as surrogate parents to several children in the church and community. Bishop Long faced multiple accusations of sexual misconduct for molesting young boys at church, charges which later proved to be true. Vanessa could not handle these accusations and she struggled with the decision of divorcing him. She filed for divorce but ultimately returned to her marriage determined to share her experience and guide others.
Bishop Eddie Long was accused of taking advantage of young men who visited his church and tried to sexually assault them. After the suit was filed against him, his followers started asking questions. The long queue of cars lined up outside his church on Sunday mornings started disappearing. Long’s association with music stars and celebrities vanished.
Bishop Eddie Long died from an aggressive form of cancer on January 15, 2017. In the months leading up to his death, he lost a significant amount of weight.
