Coach and former player Mark Anthony "Bo" Pelini hails from Youngstown, Ohio. He was the defensive coordinator for the Louisiana State University Tigers football team. Carl Pelini, former Florida Atlantic head coach and Bo's elder brother, has served as an assistant coach on numerous occasions. Bo Pelini was born on December 13, 1967, and was nicknamed Bo after the Cleveland Browns running back Bo Scott. He attended Cardinal Mooney High School and played the free safety position for the Buckeyes of Ohio State University. He earned his master's degree in sports administration from the University of Ohio in 1999.
In 1991, Pelini began his coaching career at Iowa University as an assistant for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Along with his coaching career, he had a brief stint as the line-backers coach for the Detroit Drive. In 1994, he got his first coaching job in the NFL when he was hired as the scouting assistant for the San Francisco 49ers. He was soon promoted to the defensive backs coach. His first taste of the Super Bowl was in 1995 when he coached the 49ers to a win against the San Diego Chargers with a final score of 49-26.
In 1997, Pelini was appointed as the defensive backs coach for the New England Patriots. He helped the Patriots reach the playoffs twice. In 2000, Pelini was hired by the Green Bay Packers as the linebackers coach under head coach Mike Sherman. During his tenure with the Packers, the team posted an impressive 33-15 record.
Pelini returned to college coaching programs in 2003 when he was hired as the defensive coordinator for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. At the time, Nebraska's defense ranked 55th nationally, but with Pelini as the new defensive coordinator, their ranking almost improved overnight to 11th. Despite posting a 9-3 record in his first season, Pelini was fired by the new athletic director, Steve Pederson. With the departure of Pelini, Nebraska's defensive rank sank back down to 56th nationally.
In 2004, Pelini was hired as the co-defensive coordinator for the Oklahoma Sooners. He helped the team win 12 championship games and earn a spot in the BCS National Championship. In 2005, he was hired by Louisiana State University as their defensive coordinator. His success story continued with Louisiana taking 3rd place in overall defense under Pelini's coaching.

In 2007, Pelini was hired as the new head coach for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, a sweet revenge for him as he returned to the team that had fired him. As the head coach, he took Nebraska to greater heights and was rewarded with a salary increase from $1.1 million to $1.8 million. Under Pelini, Nebraska held 1st place in defense during the 2009 season.
In 2012, Pelini had a mild heart attack during a match against Arkansas State, which his team won 42-13. On November 30, 2014, Bo was fired again by Nebraska for the second time. He left the Nebraska football program with at least nine wins every season during his seven-year tenure with the team. He is often criticized for never winning the big one despite his impressive record, as Nebraska never won a conference title under his coaching. People felt that his hiring was justified because they had given him enough years to try to win the big championship.
At present, he serves as the head coach for the football team of Youngstown University.
After a home game loss to UCLA on September 14, 2013, someone anonymously leaked an audiotape to the online sports blog Deadspin. The audiotape was two years old and had been recorded after the Nebraska Cornhuskers had won a game against Ohio State, having come back from a deficit. When Nebraska was losing, some students left the game early because they felt Nebraska couldn't win after being 27-6 down in the third quarter. The Cornhuskers mounted an impressive comeback and won 34-27. Bo was caught on the tape saying F-bombs.
Bo was fired up because of the lack of support from his fans. His team had won the game, but he was angry with people leaving early. After the tape was released to the public and his voice was identified, Bo had no choice but to apologize. There was no way he could deny the allegation as it was his voice. He took full responsibility and said, "I take full responsibility for these comments. They were spoken in a private room following the Ohio State game. I was venting following a series of emotional events which led to this moment. That being said, these comments are in no way indicative of my true feelings. I love it here in Nebraska and feel fortunate to be associated with such a great University and fan base. I again apologize to anyone whom I have offended."
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln chancellor Harvey Perlman said that the university would take some time to review the incident and decide how to proceed. They eventually decided to move on without any consequence for Bo.
Some media speculated that Bo's words had hurt the fans and would take a lot of time to win their support. Some fans felt he should be fired, while others thought it wasn't that big of a deal.
Pelini is married to Mary Pat Pelini. His wife has given birth to three of their children. They are a happy family with two daughters and a son.
