Brandi Carlile is an American folk-rock singer and songwriter who was born on June 1, 1981, in Ravensdale, Washington, in the United States. She grew up in a small town 40 miles from Seattle where the nearest neighbor was miles away. As a child, she loved playing in the woods and building forts with her brother and sister. Carlile dropped out of high school to become a singer and taught herself how to play both piano and guitar. She began performing in Seattle music clubs and in 2004 she was signed by Columbia Records. She released her debut, self-titled album "Brandi Carlile" in 2005. It was re-released by Columbia Records and included two new songs "Throw It All Away" and "What Can I Say". Carlile was named to Rolling Stone's 10 Artists to Watch in 2005 list.
Her album peaked at number 80 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 1 on the U.S. Folk Albums chart. She followed up her debut album with her second album "The Story" in 2007. Carlile recorded the album in an eleven-day long session. The album's title track "The Story" was featured in General Motors commercials during the 2008 Summer Olympics. She married English singer Catherine Shepherd in Boston, Massachusetts on September 15, 2012, and went on to adopt two girls together.
