Bruce Pearl was born on March 18th, 1960 in Boston. He attended Sharon High School in Sharon, and then went on to graduate from Boston College in 1982. He worked as the manager of the men's basketball team at Boston College. He is currently the head coach for the Auburn Tigers men's basketball program. He has been a coach for basketball teams at various places throughout his career.
He was embroiled in a recruitment scandal during the 1988-89 season when he was an assistant coach at Iowa. The matter came to light when both Illinois and Iowa wanted to recruit a top high school player named Deon Thomas. Deon committed to Illinois. Bruce then called Deon and asked if Illinois had tried to bribe him, and Deon's answer seemed to indicate a positive response. Bruce recorded the conversation and sent it to the NCAA. However, when the NCAA investigated, Thomas claimed he had only said what he did to get Bruce off his back, which was proven to be true by a polygraph test.
Bruce coached the Horizon League alongside Jimmy Collins (who was the coach of Illinois during the scandal), though they were not particularly cordial with each other. He got his first head coaching job in 1992 at Southern Indiana. During his first season, he led the Screaming Eagles to a record of 22-7 and directly to the NCAA Division II tournament, where they won four Great Lakes Valley Conference titles. The team set a record of 28-4 in 1994 but lost the Division II championship. In 1995, the team won 29 games and the Division II championship. He gave the team power, and it took around 10 years to get the team to Division I games. He became the head coach for Tennessee on March 28, 2005. He joined Auburn as a coach on March 8, 2014, signing a six-year contract costing $2.2 million. The team won its first game on November 14, 2014.
He is the second-fastest coach to win 300 games. He became the first person to be the president of the Jewish Coaches Association. He cheered for the Lady Vols game on January 22nd, 2007. Apart from this, he painted his upper body orange. His team defeated the Florida Gators on March 5th, 2008. His 400th win came with his team winning over UNC-Asheville on December 3rd, 2008. He became the second-fastest coach to get his 100th victory for Tennessee on November 17th, 2009.
He is married and his wife's name is Brandy. He was previously married to Kim Pearl. He filed for divorce two days before their 25th wedding anniversary. Not much has been mentioned about his personal life in any of his biographies. He is a father to two daughters and two sons. Their son Steven played for the basketball team at Tennessee.
