China Chow is a British-born actress and model, best known for her work in film, television, and fashion. Born in 1974 in London, England, she is the daughter of renowned restaurateur Michael Chow, founder of the Mr Chow restaurant chain, and Tina Chow, a former model and fashion designer. Her multi-ethnic heritage includes Chinese, Japanese, German, and Scottish ancestry. Chow has a younger brother named Max, and her aunt is Tsai Chin, a notable actress who appeared in several James Bond films.
At the age of five, her family relocated from London to New York. Chow later moved to Los Angeles, where she attended Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles. She went on to study psychology at Scripps College in California, earning her bachelor’s degree. Fluent in French and deeply interested in the arts from an early age, she was often exposed to the creative world through her culturally rich upbringing.
After graduating from college, China Chow embarked on a successful modeling career. She became a sought-after face in the fashion industry and modeled for major brands including DKNY, GAP, Tommy Hilfiger, Barneys New York, Lane Crawford, and Shiseido. Her work drew the attention of top fashion photographers such as Arthur Elgort, David Bailey, Mario Testino, Richard Avedon, Mario Sorrenti, Inez & Vinoodh, Terry Richardson, and Patrick Demarchelier.
Chow made her acting debut in 1998 alongside Mark Wahlberg in the action-comedy film The Big Hit. She continued acting with roles in films such as Head Over Heels directed by Mark Waters and Spun directed by Jonas Åkerlund. On television, she appeared in the first season of the USA Network series Burn Notice.
In 2010, Chow expanded her presence on television by serving as a judge on Work of Art: The Next Great Artist, a Bravo reality competition series that premiered on June 9, 2010. She has also made guest appearances on various talk shows, including NBC's Today Show and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, contributing to her visibility in popular culture.
Having grown up surrounded by art and culture, Chow developed a passion for artistic expression from a young age. Regular visits to museums and galleries with her parents cultivated her early interest. She was introduced to drawing with the encouragement of family friend and acclaimed artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Her artistic education was further enriched through encounters with influential artists such as Keith Haring, Francesco Clemente, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, and Julian Schnabel while living in Manhattan.
Chow has described art as one of the truest forms of self-expression, believing that while clothing and food are essential aspects of life, art transcends boundaries and communicates on a deeper level.
In 1996, China Chow was named one of Harper’s Bazaar’s ‘It Girls’ and was also featured in Vogue's “The Next Best-Dressed List” the same year. Her appeal extended to mainstream pop culture, ranking 22nd in Maxim’s Hot 100 Women list in both 2000 and 2001.
In addition to her work in fashion and entertainment, Chow actively supports charitable organizations. She volunteers with non-profits including Chrysalis, The Art of Elysium, and Inner-City Arts, contributing to causes that align with her commitment to creativity and social betterment.
