Christopher Abbott was born in 1986 in Greenwich, Connecticut. His parents are Anna Servidio and Orville Abbott. He has an older sister named Christina. Abbott spent most of his childhood in Chickahominy, a predominantly Italian-American, working-class neighborhood. Of Portuguese and Italian descent, Abbott identifies as white and holds American nationality.
During his formative years, Abbott worked at a friend’s wine store and a local video store. He began his education at Norwalk Community College before pursuing acting studies at HB Studio. To be closer to the school, he moved to New York City, where he later launched his acting career.
While in New York, Abbott began attending open casting calls, which led to his first roles in theater productions. His professional stage debut came in 2008 with the Off-Broadway play Good Boys and True, written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and directed by Scott Ellis. His performance opened the door to additional stage roles, including a part in Mouth to Mouth, where he portrayed the 15-year-old son of Lisa Emery’s character.
In 2011, Abbott starred in the Off-Broadway play Where We’re Born by Lucy Thurber at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater. He continued his stage work with a performance in the 2015 production of John by Annie Baker, alongside Lois Smith and Georgia Engel at Signature Theatre.
Abbott made his film debut in 2011 in the critically acclaimed drama thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene, directed by Sean Durkin and co-starring Elizabeth Olsen. That same year, he appeared in his first Broadway production, a revival of The House of Blue Leaves, sharing the stage with Edie Falco and Ben Stiller.
His later film work includes roles in A Most Violent Year, The Sleepwalker, and Hello I Must Be Going. Notably, Abbott earned critical acclaim for his lead role in the 2015 drama James White, in which he delivered a powerful portrayal of a troubled young man coping with grief and responsibility.
Christopher Abbott became widely recognized for his role as Charlie Dattolo in the HBO comedy-drama series Girls. His character, the on-again, off-again boyfriend of Marnie, drew attention for its emotional depth and relatability, firmly establishing Abbott’s presence in the television world.
Abbott currently resides in New York City. He has been romantically linked to British actress Olivia Cooke. He cites filmmaker John Cassavetes as one of his key influences and has expressed a desire to emulate Cassavetes’ creative and independent career path.
