David Byrne is a Scottish-American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, artist, actor, writer, and filmmaker. He is best known as a founding member, principal songwriter, and lead vocalist and guitarist of the American new wave band Talking Heads.
David Byrne was born on May 14, 1952, in Dumbarton, Scotland. When he was two years old, his family relocated to Canada. After six years, they moved again, settling in a suburb near Baltimore, Maryland. Byrne attended the Maryland Institute College of Art and later enrolled at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. It was at RISD in 1970 that he met fellow students Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth. Together, they formed a band called the Artistics, which served as a precursor to the Talking Heads.
In mid-1974, Byrne moved to New York City to focus on his music career. Frantz and Weymouth joined him shortly thereafter. Along with new member Jerry Harrison, they formed the Talking Heads. According to Byrne, the band’s name was inspired by a term he found in TV Guide describing visually engaging yet content-neutral talking-heads in television interviews.
The band played their debut show under the name Talking Heads on June 20, 1975, opening for the Ramones at CBGB, a legendary club in the Bowery district of Manhattan. Their performance quickly garnered attention, leading to a record deal with Sire Records in 1977. The band would go on to become one of the most influential groups of the late 20th century, known for blending post-punk, funk, world music, and art rock.
