David Gilmour is an English guitarist, singer, and songwriter who was born on March 6, 1946, in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Gilmour was raised by his mother Sylvia and his father Douglas Gilmour. He grew up in Trumpington but moved several times in 1956 with his family before landing in Grantchester Meadows. Gilmour was interested in music and with some encouragement from his parents, he bought his first single, "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley. He was also inspired by songs like "Heartbreak Hotel" by Elvis Presley and "Bye Bye Love" by the Everly Brothers. Gilmour borrowed his neighbor's guitar to begin learning how to play the songs he liked and loved it so much he never gave it back. When he was 11, Gilmour attended the Perse School on Hills Road Cambridge where he met future bandmates, Syd Barrett and Roger Waters. In 1962, he studied A-level modern languages at Cambridge Technical College where he learned to speak French. Gilmour later dropped out to join the blues-rock group Jokers Wild.
They recorded one album together at Regent Sound Studio in west London. He ended up drifting from Spain to France with Barrett and other friends performing cover songs wherever they went. In 1965, Gilmour officially formed the group Pink Floyd with Barrett and Waters in London. Gilmour married American model Virginia "Ginger" Hasenbein on July 7, 1975, and had four children. They eventually divorced and Gilmour married novelist and journalist Polly Samson and had another four children.
