Delia Buckley Gallagher, an American writer based in Rome, is the Senior Editor of the Vatican magazine Inside the Vatican. Previously, she served as CNN's Faith and Values Correspondent, and she has worked as a CNN Vatican analyst, Vaticanologist, and religious journalist based in New York for over two decades. She lived in Rome for seven years before relocating to New York to work full-time for CNN.
Delia Buckley Gallagher was born on March 11, 1970, to Irish parents in San Francisco, California. She has five younger brothers. Gallagher earned her Bachelor's degree from the University of San Francisco and her MPhil in Theology from Oxford University's Blackfriars College. She is married and has two children. Gallagher is fluent in both Italian and French, as well as other languages.
Gallagher began her career in journalism while still in college when she worked as a part-time journalist for the San Francisco-based television station KCBS. Upon graduating, she began working full-time at the AM News Radio Station in her hometown. She has also worked as an editor and researcher at the Oxford University Press, where she was responsible for creating a CD-ROM containing the Dead Sea Scrolls.
She relocated to Rome in 1998 and began working as a writer for the television show "Inside the Vatican." She also wrote a weekly piece for the Zenit News Agency, titled "Rome Notes." She lived in the Parioli area of Rome during her time there. In 2005, she began her career at CNN as the network's faith and values correspondent. She also contributed to the shows "On the Story," "Lou Dobbs," "Anderson Cooper 360," and "CNN Newsroom."
Gallagher has traveled with Pope John Paul II to Slovakia, Poland, Croatia, and Spain. She has covered news related to the Vatican's rules on homosexuality and the issues concerning priesthood. She has also reported on intelligent design and about the Hassidic Jews in Brooklyn. Her two-hour exclusive, titled "The Last Days of Pope John Paul II: The Untold Stories," was broadcast on the first anniversary of the death of Pope John Paul. She has also appeared as a religious expert on various shows on CNN. She was recently consulted for the first encyclical, Deus Caritas Est, of Pope Benedict XVI.
Delia Gallagher is often described by her colleagues as a well-focused and hardworking person. Her current written work includes "A Peek Through the Vatican Curtains," "A Pope's Last Request: Read Me the Bible for CNN," "Holy House of Loreto; New Saints; Marvelli and Suriano" for Zenit. Gallagher, a Roman Catholic, says that it is difficult to work in a secular press, as it does not allow for an in-depth discussion on religion.
Even though Gallagher has remained tight-lipped about her personal life, we know that she is currently married to Giovanni, a man of Italian descent. They have two children, Charlotte, seven, and Francesco, five. In the town of Talamone in the Tuscan Maremma region, the couple spends their vacations in the home of Giovanni's ancestors. The house is surrounded by a beautiful garden that runs down to the sea.
