Don Rickles is an American stand-up comedian, actor, and author who was born on May 8, 1926, in Queens, New York to a Jewish family. His father's name was Max Rickles and his mother's name was Etta Rickles. He spent his early years growing up in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York. Rickles attended Newtown High School and upon graduating he enlisted in the United States Navy just in time to serve in World War II. Rickles was posted on board the motor torpedo boat tender USS Cyrene, an AGP-13. He was a seaman first class and honorably discharged in 1946.
Two years after being discharged from the Navy, Rickles set his sights on becoming an actor. He went to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and began taking small roles on television. Rickles eventually became frustrated with the lack of work for actors so he began performing in comedy clubs across New York, Miami, and Los Angeles. He became known as an insult comedian for his quick wit when it came to responding to hecklers looking to interrupt his show. He met several famous actors when he hosted his own show called "The Don Rickles Show". Guests included actors such as Lorne Greene. He even participated in a "Dean Martin Celebrity Roast" special. On April 6, 2017, at his home in Beverly Hills, California, Rickles died of kidney failure.
