Eliza Jane Taylor-Cotter was born on October 24, 1989, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. She grew up in a creative household—her mother was a graphic designer and an author, while her stepfather performed as a stand-up comedian. Her biological father operated cafés throughout Melbourne. Taylor attended Calder High School and initially aspired to become a marine biologist before discovering her passion for acting.
Taylor began her acting career in 2002 and quickly landed prominent roles in Australian television. She gained attention with a lead role in the children’s series Pirate Islands and followed with her portrayal of Rosie Cartwright in The Sleepover Club in 2003. That same year, she made a guest appearance in the police drama Blue Heelers, signaling a shift toward more mature roles.
In 2005, like many fellow Australian actors, Taylor secured a major breakout role in the long-running soap opera Neighbours. Originally auditioning for the character Lana Crawford—a role that ultimately went to Bridget Neval—Taylor was later cast as Janae Timmins following a guest appearance. Her performance resonated with viewers and she became a series regular.
Despite casting changes in 2007, including the departure of on-screen family members played by Nell Feeney and Sianoa Smit-McPhee, Taylor chose to remain on the show a while longer. However, the evolving cast dynamics and a shift in the show's atmosphere prompted her decision to leave the series later that year. Her final studio scenes were filmed in 2007. For her performance, she earned a nomination for Best Actress at the Inside Soap Awards.
After leaving Neighbours, Taylor traveled to the UK in November 2007. The following month, she participated in community events, including turning on the Christmas lights in Weymouth. She also starred in a Christmas pantomime production as Snow White. Returning to Australia, she had guest appearances in an episode of All Saints in 2009 and began expanding her film portfolio with roles in the indie drama Laundry and the horror film 6 Plots. She also appeared in episodes of the Australian TV series Winners & Losers.
In March 2013, Taylor was cast as Clarke Griffin in The CW's post-apocalyptic science fiction series The 100. Although she did not audition specifically for the role at the time, a previous audition tape impressed the producers, leading them to schedule a reading with her. This opportunity marked a significant turning point in her career and launched her to international stardom.
The 100 premiered on March 19, 2014, and ran for seven seasons. Taylor’s role as Clarke Griffin became one of the most prominent and critically praised elements of the show. Her performance earned her a nomination for Choice TV Actress: Sci-Fi/Fantasy at the Teen Choice Awards.
Taylor’s portrayal in The 100 established her as a prominent figure in science fiction television. Her ability to transition from Australian daytime television to an internationally recognized genre series exemplifies her versatility and persistence as an actress.
