When she was 10-years-old, Macpherson's parents divorced and she moved with her mother and her two siblings. She spent her early years growing up in East Lindfield in Sydney's North Shore. Macpherson graduated from Killara High School and completed her Higher School Certificate in 1981. She went on to attend the University of Sydney but her studies there only lasted a year and she turned to a career in modeling in the United States instead.</p>

<p>Her career as a model began in 1982 when she appeared in a television commercial for Tab. She earned a reputation as a "girl next door" figure in her home country.
