Eloise Mumford is an American actress most known for her lead role in the film, Fifty Shades of Grey.
Eloise Mumford was born on September 24, 1986, in Olympia, Washington. She was born to Tom Mumford and Nancy Smith and was their second child. Her father was a scientist while her mother was a teacher. She came from a well educated background that taught her how to behave in life and treat people with respect. With two parents who excelled in school, there was no way that Eloise would start off life on the wrong foot.
Eloise has two siblings, she has one elder sister named Anna Mumford and one younger brother named Kai Mumford. She spent most her childhood growing up in the city of Olympia. Her roots were very strong in her hometown.
Until her fifth grade in education, she was homeschooled. Some of her peers’ parents assumed that she was at a disadvantage because she was not receiving the same social experiences but they were wrong. She wasn’t just homeschooled by regular parents. She was homeschooled by very smart parents who knew what they were doing.
After her homeschooling stint, she attended Annie Aright School located in Tacoma, Washington. She then went on to attend Capital High School in Olympia. She had a strong interest towards acting ever since the young and tender age of seven. She had participated in many school plays conducted at her high school and also at the Capital Playhouse of Olympia.
After completing her primary schooling, she attended Tisch School of the Arts of New York University from where she graduated in the year 2009. She has also attended Atlantic Acting School and has learned her acting skills from the greatest acting teachers and mentors.
Mumford was a shy child in her childhood and always dreamt to become either a doctor or a teacher just like her parents. But when a family friend of hers took her to the production house of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s known as South Pacific, her whole life changed. Even though it was just a local production house, it made a huge impact on her. After that, she started to have the passion towards acting and therefore become an active member in theater and choir singing. She started her career on TV and received her first role for only 4 episodes in the serial series Crash as the character of Megan Emory. She has also played small roles in many TV series like Just in Time for Christmas, Christmas with Holly, Mercy, and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. She gained her first taste of fame for her role in Lone Star portraying the role of Lindsay Holloway. The role was only for five episodes but established her as a strong young rising star in the television industry.
When asked by Coveteur if acting was what she always wanted to do with her life, Eloise responded, “I started doing community theater when I was eight and always, in the back of my head, thought being an actor would be incredible, but knew it wasn’t a very practical life choice. As I got older, I toyed around with the idea of being a doctor, or a high school math teacher, because I always really loved math, but at the same time, still had this burning passion to act. I think it’s because I love the idea of getting more than one lifetime, and that somehow, by being an actor and getting to inhabit other people’s stories, you get to be a doctor; you get to be a nurse; you get to be a teacher. So I applied for both pre-med and acting, but couldn’t decide what I was going to do, so I took a gap year. And I ended up going and teaching English in Transylvania.”
The pursuit of acting was not just a career experience for it, it was also a life experience, “It was a really wild, transformative experience. I was living in such extreme poverty there, surrounded by people with such grace, and generosity, and love. It made me reexamine the way that I was thinking about the rest of my life. I felt incredibly lucky to be born in a situation where following my dream was an actual [possibility]. So I was like, ‘You know what? If I have the opportunity to go to NYU for acting and do this thing that is a total pipe dream, I should just do it.”
She started her acting career in films in the year 2009 with her debut film called Some Boys Don’t Leave which was a short film and was directed by Maggie Kiley. This film received good success and thus landed more roles for Mumford. In the year 2012, she acted in the movie So Undercover while in 2013 she played the role of Sue Lawson in movie Drones. In the year 2014, she appeared in two movies called In the Blood and Not Safe for Work. However, her most noteworthy role came in 2015’s well-known movie Fifty Shades of Grey in which she depicted the role of Katherine ‘Kate’ Kavanagh.
