Gareth Southgate was born on September 3, 1970, in Watford, England. He grew up in Crawley, West Sussex, where he attended Pound Hill Junior School and later Hazelwick School. His early interest in football paved the way for a successful professional career in the sport.
Southgate began his professional football career at Crystal Palace, initially playing as a right-back before transitioning to central midfield. His versatility and leadership soon drew attention from other clubs, and he transferred to Aston Villa for a fee of £2.5 million. At Villa, he was once again repositioned—this time as a centre-back—where he became a key component of the team's strong defensive lineup.
In 2001, Southgate joined Middlesbrough for a reported fee of £6.5 million. He continued to be an influential figure on the pitch until his final professional appearance in the 2006 UEFA Cup Final, where Middlesbrough lost 4–0 to Sevilla.
Following his retirement as a player, Southgate took on a managerial role at Middlesbrough in June 2006. Though relatively inexperienced at the time, he managed the club for several seasons. His coaching career took a significant leap in November 2016 when he was appointed as the England national team manager on a four-year contract.
As England manager, Southgate brought a more modern and progressive approach to the national team. His leadership received widespread praise during the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Notably, England defeated Sweden 2–0 in the quarter-finals, marking the team’s first appearance in a World Cup semi-final since 1990. Southgate was credited with fostering a strong team spirit and improving England's international reputation.
Gareth Southgate married Alison Bird in July 1997 at St Nicholas’ Church in Worth. The couple has two children. Despite his high-profile career, Southgate is known for maintaining a relatively private personal life.
