George Strait, dubbed the "King of Country," is an American country music singer, songwriter, actor, and music producer. He is one of the most influential and well-known music artists of all time, known for being one of the first and most prominent country artists to bring country music back to its roots and away from the pop country era in the 1980s.
George Strait was born on May 18, 1952, in Texas. His father, John Byron Strait, a junior high school math teacher, owned a 2,000-acre ranch in Texas that had been in the family for over 100 years. During George's childhood, his parents divorced, and his mother took her daughter with her, leaving George with custody of him and his brother.
George and his younger brother, John Jr., were raised by their father. They spent their childhood in town during the week and stayed on the ranch on weekends. George was a student at Pearsall High School, where his interest in music began. After high school, he enrolled at Southwest Texas State University, where he studied agriculture and graduated in 1979. George played in various garage bands and was a fan of The Beatles and other popular bands of that era.
In 1971, George Strait enlisted in the Army and married his girlfriend, Norma, on December 4th, 1971 in Mexico. Their daughter, Jennifer, was born on October 6th, 1972. Tragically, George Strait lost his daughter, Jennifer, in a car accident when she was thirteen years old. He dedicated his song, "You'll Be There," to her. Strait is a religious person and believes he will be with her in Heaven someday. The family created a foundation in her honor, a fundraiser for charities that work in child care, education, and health. George Strait Jr., also known as Bubba, has been in a long-term relationship with Tamara, a friend of Priscilla Pooch, since their high school days; however, they have yet to tie the knot.

George Strait was not interested in country music as a young man; he usually preferred listening to rock and roll, but eventually changed his focus to country music. Not having been formally trained in music, George joined a college band where he saw a flyer advertisement for a vocalist. While at Texas State, he also established his country band, Ace in the Hole. "Unwound" was his first single album, released in 1981.
Some of Strait's notable works include "Strait Out of the Box," a four-disc box set highlighting Strait's career, which was produced in 1995 and became one of the most significant-selling box sets in music history. His album "Blue Clear Sky" climbed to number one on the country charts and number seven on the pop charts. In 1997, he released "Carrying Your Love with Me," followed by "One Step at a Time" in 1998. "George Strait, The Album," featuring his song "Go On," came out in 2000. Strait has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, including 13 multi-platinum albums. He is third only to Elvis Presley and The Beatles with the most gold and platinum albums in music history. Over 35 years, George has the second-highest number of albums sold in country music history and has won many prestigious awards in his musical career.
Straight has 44 Billboard No. 1 singles, the most of any artist in any genre of music. He is also the only artist in history to have a top ten hit annually for over thirty years. In addition, George holds 22 CMA wins and is the most nominated artist in CMA history with a count of 81 Country Music nominations. During Strait's last tour, "The Cowboy Rides Away," he gave a concert in Texas at AT&T Stadium in Arlington in June 2014 that drew 104,793 people, marking a new record for the largest indoor show in North America. In 1992, Strait featured in his first movie, "Pure Country." He has also acted in other films, including The Soldier in 1982 and Grand Champion in 2002.
