Guy Martin, born on November 4, 1981, in Grimsby, United Kingdom, is best known as a former British motorcycle racer and television presenter. He is the son of Ian Martin, a former amateur motorcycle racer who competed in several Isle of Man TT events, and Rita Kidals. Following Guy’s birth, the family expanded to include three more children and moved to a larger home outside Grimsby to accommodate their growing household.
From a young age, Martin displayed a strong interest in mechanics. He often disassembled and rebuilt engines from lawnmowers and other machines to modify them for speed. He attended Kirmington Church of England Primary School and later The Vale Academy. At 16, he enrolled in North Lindsey College to study motor vehicle engineering, but quickly became disillusioned with the course, feeling it offered little beyond what he already knew and provided no financial incentive. After a month, he left college to begin an apprenticeship as a truck fitter at a Volvo Truck & Bus Centre.
While apprenticing as a truck mechanic, Martin began racing motorcycles during his free time. His talent quickly became evident, and he joined Team Racing before later moving to Uel Duncan Racing, where he remained until 2005. Martin went on to achieve notable success in road racing, most prominently in events like the Isle of Man TT, where he earned 17 podium finishes but did not secure a win. Throughout his career, he faced numerous injuries, including two broken backs sustained in racing accidents.
After retiring from professional racing, Martin transitioned into television, leveraging his engineering expertise and mechanical curiosity. He became well known for presenting programs centered on engineering challenges, speed records, and historical recreations involving mechanical work. His shows have included complex projects such as building custom machinery, attempting world speed records, and exploring historical engineering feats, which showcased his unique blend of hands-on knowledge and engaging personality.
