Jurgen Klopp was born on 16 June 1967 in Stuttgart, West Germany. He grew up with two siblings and developed a passion for football from a young age. Klopp began his playing career with German club 1. FSV Mainz 05, where he spent the majority of his professional career. Initially playing as a striker, he transitioned to a defensive role later due to declining speed as he aged.
After retiring from professional football in 2001, Klopp promptly began his managerial career with Mainz 05. He embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly and served as the club's head coach for seven years. Known for his high-energy and attacking coaching style, Klopp applied these principles from the outset. During his playing days at Mainz, he had scored 52 goals, reflecting his early attacking mindset.
As a manager, Klopp achieved what he couldn’t as a player—guiding Mainz to the Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history in 2004. The promotion was a milestone in his career, eliciting an emotional response as he celebrated the club’s historic achievement. Although Mainz was relegated after three seasons, Klopp remained for another year in a bid to secure promotion but eventually resigned at the end of the 2007 season after an unsuccessful campaign.
In 2008, Klopp was appointed as the head coach of Borussia Dortmund, a club that had finished 13th in the Bundesliga the previous season. Tasked with reviving the team, he brought in a fresh tactical approach and infectious energy. His first two seasons saw the club finish sixth and fifth, respectively. By his third season, Dortmund clinched the Bundesliga title by outpacing rivals Bayern Munich.
The following year, Klopp led Dortmund to another Bundesliga title, this time setting a record with 81 points—a league-best at the time. In 2013, he steered the team to the UEFA Champions League final, where they were narrowly defeated by Bayern Munich. This run further established Borussia Dortmund as a major European football force. Klopp concluded his tenure at Dortmund in 2015, having turned the club into a respected contender both domestically and internationally.
In October 2015, Klopp signed a contract with English Premier League club Liverpool FC. Upon his arrival, he began transforming the team with his intense, pressing style of play, often dubbed "gegenpressing." Under his leadership, Liverpool became known for their attacking football and high work rate.
Although early on the defense showed vulnerabilities, Klopp gradually reinforced the squad. He initially guided the team to a strong finish and, in the 2018–2019 season, led Liverpool to a second-place league finish with a remarkable 97 points—just one point behind Manchester City. That same season, Klopp’s Liverpool won the UEFA Champions League, marking the club’s sixth European title. In 2019–2020, Klopp led Liverpool to their first English league title in 30 years.
Jurgen Klopp is married to Ulla Sandrock, a children's novelist. The couple has one son together. Known for his charisma and media-friendly personality, Klopp is among the highest-paid football managers. His salary at Liverpool is reported to be around $7 million annually, and his estimated net worth is approximately $20 million.
