James Denton was born on January 20, 1963, in Nashville, Tennessee, and raised in the nearby town of Goodlettsville. He attended Goodlettsville High School before enrolling at the University of Tennessee, where he majored in Journalism and Television. He earned a degree in Advertising prior to launching his career in the entertainment industry.
Before transitioning into acting, Denton worked in advertising sales. At the age of 23, he took his first steps onto the stage at a community theatre in Nashville, sparking his interest in performance arts. In pursuit of a full-time acting career, Denton later moved to California. Since beginning his journey, he has acted in over 30 television and film projects.
During his time in Chicago, Denton gained critical acclaim for his performance as Stanley in a local production of A Streetcar Named Desire. One of his most notable roles came in the play The Diviners, where he portrayed a Kentucky preacher named C.C. Showers. Denton has been featured in an array of independent films, including several written by his friend Mike Petty. His first film role came in 1993, portraying Ray Higgs in Thieves Quartet. In 1999, he played Steven in the film In Walked Monk, also penned by Petty. Denton continued to build his filmography through the 1990s and early 2000s with appearances in projects such as Basic Football (1994), Hunter’s Moon (1995), Sliders, Dark Skies, and Moloney (all in 1996), That Old Feeling and Face/Off (1997), and Primary Colors (1998).
He also starred in episodes of popular TV series including Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place, Ally McBeal, and The West Wing in the year 2000. More recent roles include appearances in Hot in Cleveland and Karaoke Man in 2012, Grace Unplugged (2013), Stranded in Paradise (2014), and Devious Maids (2016). Since 2015, Denton has portrayed Dr. Sam Radford on the Hallmark Channel’s popular series Good Witch.
While in high school, Denton dated Deana Carter, who later found fame as a country music artist. Denton was previously married to Jenna Lyn from 1997 to 2000. In 2002, he remarried, tying the knot with Erin O’Brien. The couple has two children, Sheppard and Malin O’Brien.
