Jessica Lange, born on April 20, 1949, is an acclaimed American actress whose career spans film, television, and theater. Raised in a family of five, she grew up with two older sisters and a younger brother. Her father’s career required frequent relocations, resulting in an unsettled childhood. These nomadic early years influenced her adaptability and resilience in later life.
In 1968, Lange met Paco Grande, a 24-year-old photography professor. The two quickly became romantically involved and left their photography institute to travel throughout Europe and the United States. During this time, Lange was introduced to members of the film community through Grande. They returned to Minnesota in 1970 and subsequently married.
After their wedding, Lange and Grande moved to New York City, settling in the SoHo art community. While Grande resumed work on his creative projects, Lange pursued a deeper interest in performance art, focusing on mime. Inspired by French cinema, she traveled to Paris in 1971 to study under renowned mime teacher Étienne Decroux. Her dedication to the craft marked an important step in her transition from modeling to acting. She returned to New York in 1973 to continue her pursuit of an acting career.
By the mid-1970s, Lange’s marriage with Grande was faltering, and he eventually left her. To support herself, she began working as a waitress and signed with the Wilhelmina modeling agency. In 1976, producer Dino De Laurentiis cast her in the remake of the 1933 film King Kong. Her role as Dwan was a significant breakthrough, bringing her critical attention and leading to a Golden Globe win for New Star of the Year. Despite signing a seven-year contract with De Laurentiis, she collaborated with his production company for only a few years before seeking other opportunities. Their marriage was officially dissolved in 1980.
In 1979, Lange appeared in Bob Fosse’s semi-autobiographical film All That Jazz, portraying the symbolic role of the Angel of Death. The performance helped reestablish her credibility in the film industry and marked the beginning of a successful series of roles that showcased her versatility. Around this time, she began a relationship with Russian ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov.
In 1981, Lange and Baryshnikov welcomed a daughter, Alexandra. Although their relationship ended a few years later, Lange later entered into a long-term partnership with playwright and actor Sam Shepard. Together, they had two children: Hannah and Samuel Walker. The couple remained together for several years before separating in December 2011.
Beyond her acting career, Jessica Lange is also an accomplished photographer and serves as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. She has publicly discussed her struggles with depression, and in pursuit of mental well-being, she practices Buddhism, incorporating chanting and mantra recitation into her daily life. These practices have been instrumental in grounding her both personally and professionally.
