Jim Brickman is known as an American songwriter and pianist. He is most famous for his song, Angel Eyes.
Jim Brickman was born on November 20, 1961, in Shaker Heights, Ohio. Jim was raised in the midwest region of the United States where he learned the art of playing piano at a very young age. Jim's father owned a shoe factory and his mother worked at a music center. He regards his mother as his first music teacher. Jim joined the Cleveland Institute of Music and started performing there as well after he started getting comfortable with his talents.
He later completed his college education at Case Western Reserve University where he studied music and businesses. After his days of college, he started his own music advertising company which he named The Brickman Arrangement. He also worked at Windham Hill Records in addition to running his own company.
In 1994, Jim Brickman’s song, Angel Eyes came out and it was a huge success. The track made Jim a recognizable name in the music industry. In 1995, he released By Heart on the same label which was a very well received and praised album. In 1997, Jim released another album called Picture This. He also released The Gift which was a collection of his favorite tracks. He released Visions of Love in 1998 and in early 1999, Brickman came out with an album called Destiny. He did not produce a full album for the next year because he wanted to focus on producing a special called My Romance: An Evening with Jim Brickman.
In 2002, Brickman wrote a children's album named Love Songs and Lullabies which included narrated songs for children. A year later, he released The Disney Songbook. In 2004, he was honored with a Grammy nomination for the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album for the album Peace.
In 2006, Jim left his longtime record label, Windham Hill, and started working with Savoy Jazz. His first song with Savoy Jazz was Escape which was released in 2006. He continued working with Savoy Jazz and released multiple albums on his new label. He also collaborated with Michael W. Smith to create a romantic song called Love of My Life which became very popular for its lyrics and relaxing harmony.
Jim has been on a tour to different parts of the world as a famous musical artist. In an interview with New Age Music World, Jim Brickman was asked to give some insight into his performances and the process behind his music. In 2011, he had a Christmas Concert Tour and invited special guest vocalists Anne Cochran and Ben Utecht to join him on the tour. He also enlisted the help of a famous violinist, Tracy Silverman who was thrilled to work with Jim.

He was glowing as he spoke about the team that would help him during the holiday concert season, “I’ve been performing with Anne Cochran and Tracy Silverman for many, many years. Anne and I met in high school. I look forward to performing with her, not only because we are close friends, but because she has a beautiful voice and a great personality. Tracy is a brilliant musician who adds a dimension to my concert that you don’t normally expect to hear. Ben Utecht is new to the tour but maybe a familiar name to NFL football fans. He was a member of the Super Bowl Championship Indianapolis Colts. He has a powerful voice that brings new meaning to familiar songs and old favorites. Ben has a large presence on stage, and he wears his Super Bowl ring!”
Jim does not hesitate when it comes to giving back to the new generation of young musicians. He was asked by New Age Music World to give some advice to the new class and provide some tips on how they should advance through their careers, “Listen to many different artists that you enjoy and admire. Hear what it is in their music and lyrics that speak to you. Then when you sit down to write, adopt what you like from other elements and make it your own.”
Even though it is good practice to mimic your mentors at the early stages, the most important thing to Jim is developing your own unique sound, “So many pianists tell me “Everyone says I sound like Jim Brickman. How do I start my career?” Well, there’s already a Jim Brickman, so I tell them the best way is to create a new, unique sound. Find places to be heard. And don’t be afraid of rejection. Find places to play and show off your talent. Start small and get your style and personality known so that you can grow your career.”
