John Wesley Dean III was born on October 14, 1938, in Akron, Ohio. He began his college education at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, before transferring to the College of Wooster in Ohio, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1961. He later received a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1965.
John Dean rose to national prominence in 1970 when he was appointed White House Counsel to President Richard Nixon. His most notable role emerged in 1972 during the Watergate scandal. Dean initially participated in efforts to manage the political fallout from the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters. However, he later refused to author a false report denying the White House’s involvement in the cover-up. As evidence mounted, Dean chose to cooperate with federal investigators.
On April 30, 1973, President Nixon dismissed Dean from his position. In June of that year, Dean testified publicly before the Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities, offering detailed accounts of how White House officials, including Nixon himself, attempted to obstruct justice in relation to the Watergate break-in.
Dean pleaded guilty to a single felony count of obstruction of justice. As part of a plea deal, he cooperated extensively with prosecutors and served four months at Fort Holabird, a U.S. Army training center that was used as a minimum-security facility at the time.
In later years, John Dean became a vocal political commentator and author. In June 2019, he drew media attention after testifying before Congress during hearings related to the Mueller investigation. Calling attention to the parallels between the Nixon and Trump administrations, Dean stated he was content being seen as an adversary by President Donald Trump. Trump disparaged Dean, labeling him a “sleazebag attorney” and “a loser for many years,” but Dean responded by saying he was comfortable being an enemy of someone as controversial as Trump, just as he had been in Nixon’s time.
Currently, Dean contributes political analysis as a legal and political commentator, including appearing on networks like CNN and writing on contemporary governmental issues.
John Dean has one child, John Wesley Dean IV, from his first marriage to Karla Ann Hennings. His son graduated from Denison University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and later earned an MBA.
Dean is currently married to Maureen Dean. Their relationship received public attention during the Watergate hearings, where Maureen was frequently seen in attendance. Former Nixon chief of staff H.R. Haldeman once remarked that the strength of their marriage may have contributed to Dean's resilience during political turmoil. In an interview with People magazine, Maureen shared that the challenges of Watergate ultimately strengthened their bond.
